How to defeat Onyxia?

Onyxia's Lair is indeed a relatively straightforward raid with only one boss encounter. To ensure success in the raid, here are some key strategies to keep in mind:

  • Fire Resistance: Onyxia primarily uses fire-based attacks, so equipping fire-resistance gear and consuming fire-resistance consumables such as flasks, potions, and food can significantly increase your survivability. This is especially important for tanks and players who may be susceptible to fire damage.
  • Damage-boosting Consumables: Using consumables that increase your damage output is crucial in taking down Onyxia efficiently. Ranged DPS players should ensure they have an ample supply of ammunition, as Onyxia will be airborne during the second phase, making ranged attacks necessary.
  • Ranged DPS: It's essential to have a balanced raid composition that includes a good number of ranged DPS. During the second phase of the encounter, Onyxia will be in the air, and melee players will be unable to hit her. Having sufficient ranged DPS will ensure continuous damage throughout the fight.

  • In order to access Onyxia's Lair raid, both Alliance and Horde players need to complete an attunement quest chain that culminates in receiving the Drakefire Amulet, which is required to enter the raid. The attunement quests differ between the two factions but lead to the same end result.
  • For Horde players, the quest chain begins in Kargath, Badlands. You can find Warlord Goretooth at the top of the tower (coordinates 5.8, 47.5). Speak to him and continue following the quest chain until you obtain the Drakefire Amulet.
  • Alliance players should travel to Morgan's Vigil in The Burning Steppes. Meet with Helendis Riverhorn (coordinates 85.8, 68.9) to receive the Dragonkin Menace quest, which initiates the attunement chain. Complete the subsequent quests until you acquire the Drakefire Amulet.
