As soon as you reach the Diamond tier in ranked league you will become a member of an additional Rank Decay system that detects inactive players with a subsequent downgrade of their rating. In HOTS, it is not enough just to reach the required rank, in order to receive rewards for the achieved rank you still have to keep it until the end of the season. If the system marks you as an inactive player, then you begin to receive a small amount of rank and MMR decay each day until you complete one Hero League match.

This system works in such a way that if you play one game when there are no days left on the timer until the decay, then 3 days will be added, and if you have accumulated at least one day, then for each game you get one additional day to the timer.

So there are only two options to avoid decay:

• Accumulation days - Play a certain number of games to earn additional “grace period” days
• Holding games - Regularly play Hero League matches in the current season

Diamond, Master and Grand Master ranks each have their own threshold for inactivity.
